Viking Gate Motor Replacement: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

A Viking gate motor replacement in Dallas typically runs $850 to $1,450 installed, depending on which Viking model your gate uses and whether we’re swapping just the operator or the full arm and control board assembly. We stock Viking-compatible operators on our trucks and can usually have your gate running again the same day we diagnose it.

Most Dallas homeowners discover the motor has failed when the gate stops mid-swing, groans without moving, or simply won’t respond to the remote or keypad. Sometimes it’s the control board and not the motor at all. Our job is to figure out which part actually died before you spend money on anything. Viking operators are solid machines, but Dallas heat and the stop-start cycle of daily residential use wear them down like any other electromechanical part. What most companies won’t tell you: the motor itself is rarely the first thing to fail. It’s usually the limit switches, capacitors, or the gear reduction assembly connected to it. We test all of it before recommending a replacement, because if the switch failed, replacing the motor won’t fix your gate.

Which Viking Models This Applies To

Viking makes several lines of gate operators, and the replacement motor has to match your specific series. The main residential and light-commercial lines we see across Dallas are the Viking F-1 swing gate operator, the Viking G-5 dual gate operator, and the Viking R-6 and T-21 slide gate operators. Each uses a different motor assembly, and they don’t interchange, even when they look similar from the outside.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of owners: a Viking F-1 motor will not drop into a G-5 housing, even though both are single-arm swing operators. The mounting flange, gear ratio, and shaft length are all different. And on the T-21 slide operator, the motor is a three-phase unit in many commercial installations here, which means the replacement has to match not only the model but the power supply already run to the gate. If you’re not sure which Viking you have, look for the metal data plate on the side of the operator housing. It lists the model number and serial. If the plate is faded or painted over, a photo of the housing sent to us is usually enough for our techs to identify it. We carry OEM Viking motors as well as quality aftermarket equivalents where the specs are identical and the price is meaningfully lower. We’ll tell you the price difference and let you choose, with our recommendation based on what we’d put on our own gate.

Signs Your Viking Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • Gate hums but doesn’t move. The motor is receiving power and trying to turn, but the gear assembly or drive shaft has seized, or the capacitor that gives the motor its starting torque has died. This is one of the most common failure patterns we see in Dallas, especially on gates that get cycled dozens of times a day.
  • Gate stops halfway and reverses. The motor’s internal thermal overload is tripping because the motor is pulling too much current, usually from worn gears, a misaligned gate, or failing bearings in the operator arm. It will often reset after cooling down, then fail again, which means the motor is working against something it shouldn’t have to fight.
  • Gate moves slower than it used to. A tired Viking motor loses torque before it stops entirely. If your gate used to swing open in about 12 seconds and now takes 20 or staggers, the motor windings are degrading or the run capacitor is nearly shot.
  • Remote works intermittently, but the gate doesn’t respond consistently. This usually isn’t the motor itself but the limit switch or control board telling the motor when to start and stop. We test the motor independently before condemning it. Half the “motor replacements” called into us turn out to be a $90 limit switch, not a $700 motor.
  • Burning smell near the operator housing. That’s overheated motor windings or a failing capacitor leaking electrolyte. If you smell it, stop cycling the gate and call us. Running a motor in that condition will kill the control board too, and that’s another $300 you didn’t need to spend.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Dallas, a Viking gate motor replacement installed by us generally falls between $850 and $1,450. On the lower end, that’s a same-series motor swap with no other parts needed. The higher end includes a new motor, new capacitor, new limit switches, and the labor to dial everything back in. If we’re converting a failed slide operator to a different Viking model because the old housing is too corroded, that’s a bigger job and we’ll quote it before anything starts.

The price is the price. We hand you a written quote before any work begins, and the number doesn’t move when the job is done. That quote includes the motor, any required small parts, labor, and our full-year written guarantee. If the replacement fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No arguing, no fine print. Lonnie Burke started this shop because he kept hearing from Dallas homeowners who’d been quoted one price and billed another. We don’t work that way.

DIY or Call Us?

Viking gate motors run on 120V or 240V line voltage, and the capacitor inside holds a charge even when the power is off. That’s not a “be careful” situation. That’s a “don’t open the housing unless you know how to discharge a capacitor” situation. A wrong move can send you to the emergency room. We say that plainly because too many YouTube videos skip it.

What you can safely check: Is the breaker on? Is the key or disconnect switch in the right position? Is anything visibly broken on the arm or track? Those answers help us when you call. Beyond that, let a trained tech handle the diagnosis and the swap. We’ll have it done the same day in most cases, and the work carries a written guarantee for a full year. Call (940) 531-9746 and we’ll walk through what you’re seeing before we ever roll a truck.
