Ghost Controls Access Control Installation: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

Ghost Controls access control installation in Dallas typically runs $280 to $620 installed, depending on which model you have and whether we’re adding a keypad, a vehicle sensor, or a full keypad-plus-receiver setup. We stock Ghost Controls-compatible access control parts on our trucks, so most Dallas jobs are done in a single visit. Most owners discover a problem the hard way: the keypad goes dark, the remote stops triggering the opener from the street, or the gate opens fine from the house but won’t respond at the driveway. It’s rarely the motor. It’s almost always the access control component.

One thing worth knowing up front: Carver Gate Repair Dallas is an independent service provider, not a Ghost Controls dealer or affiliate. We work on Ghost Controls equipment every week, and we match parts to the exact board revision you have, not just the model name on the arm. Lonnie Burke, our owner, has spent the better part of two decades working gate repair across Dallas, including the Kessler Park corridor, and he’ll tell you the same thing we see on job sites: Ghost Controls builds a solid opener, but their access control wiring is where Texas heat and Dallas thunderstorms do their damage first.

Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls has produced three main generations of opener systems, and the access control installation path is not the same across all of them. The current lineup includes the AXDP and AXPB battery-powered swing arm systems, the TDS2 and TSS1 solar-ready operators, and the older RVS2 and ABBT2 series that we still see on gates installed 10 to 15 years ago. The board connectors changed between generations. A keypad that plugs into an AXDP board will not plug into an older ABBT2 board without an adapter harness, and some of those harnesses are no longer manufactured.

Here is the compatibility gotcha we run into constantly in Dallas: Ghost Controls labels several access control accessories as “universal,” but the universal part applies to the receiver frequency, not the physical wiring. The AXTK keypad and the RP01 receiver both run on 318 MHz, which is correct for nearly all Ghost Controls boards sold after 2014. But the terminal block layout on the solar models (TDS2, TSS1) is smaller than on the plug-in AC models (AXDP, AXPB). If you are splicing wires, you need the right pinout. If you are plugging in, you need the right connector. That distinction is why so many “universal” DIY installs end with a keypad that lights up but does not trigger the gate.

For OEM versus aftermarket: on the receiver and keypad side, we generally recommend the Ghost Controls OEM part, because the board communication is proprietary enough that generic 318 MHz receivers cause intermittent signal drops. On the power supply side, a quality aftermarket transformer with matching voltage and amperage ratings works without issue. We carry both on the truck, and we will show you which one your system actually needs before we touch a wire.

Our Dallas service trucks also carry parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing systems, which matters when a property has mixed equipment or when a homeowner wants to upgrade from an older Ghost Controls board to something with better app integration.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Access Control Installation Is Failing

Access control failures are rarely sudden deaths. They telegraph themselves for weeks before the gate stops responding entirely. Here are the five patterns we see most often on Ghost Controls systems in Dallas:

  • Keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad is transmitting, but the receiver board has drifted off frequency or the relay contact has worn. This is the most common Ghost Controls access control failure we replace, especially on systems older than five years.
  • Works from inside the house but not from the driveway. The wired push-button inside a home is on the same board input as the receiver, so if the inside button works, the board is fine and the receiver is the problem. That narrows the diagnosis immediately.
  • Intermittent response, worse after rain. Dallas gets hard downpours in spring and again in late summer. Moisture in the receiver housing or a corroded antenna connector causes exactly this. We see it regularly in Lake Highlands and East Dallas where older installations used spliced wire runs rather than factory harnesses.
  • Remote range drops from 50 feet to 10 feet. The receiver’s front-end amplifier is degrading, or the antenna lead has worked loose inside the enclosure. This is repairable on some boards, but on sealed boards it means a new receiver module.
  • Multiple keypads or remotes fail at the same time. When several devices die at once, the receiver is the culprit, not the individual transmitters. Replacing one keypad won’t fix it. The receiver module has to be swapped and re-paired.

If you are seeing any of these patterns, say so when you call. A two-sentence description usually tells us which part we need to bring, which is how we complete most Ghost Controls access control installations in one trip.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Ghost Controls access control installation in Dallas, here is what we quote, written down, before any work starts. The price is the price.

  • Ghost Controls OEM receiver module replacement: $280 to $420 installed, depending on whether we are replacing just the receiver or the receiver plus antenna and wiring harness.
  • Ghost Controls AXTK keypad installation: $310 to $430 installed, including programming and pairing to the opener board.
  • Full access control package (keypad plus receiver plus remotes): $480 to $620 installed.
  • Diagnostic visit when a simpler fix turns out to be possible: We charge the diagnostic fee and tell you if the fix is a $40 relay or a $300 board. You get the same written quote either way.

Every Ghost Controls access control installation we do includes the written price before work starts, the part matched to your board revision, programming and pairing, a function test at the gate, and our written guarantee, good for a full year. If the repair fails inside that year, we come back at no charge. No argument, no re-quote. That is the Garrison Standard, and it applies to every job we run in Dallas, whether it’s a receiver swap in a Preston Hollow driveway or a full access control retrofit at a commercial site along Kessler Park.

One of the things Lonnie tells our technicians is: “If I can’t tell you exactly what’s wrong before I touch it, I haven’t looked closely enough.” That is the way we quote these jobs. You will know the part, the price, and the job time before we pick up a screwdriver.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one thing a homeowner can safely do before calling us: check the obvious. Make sure the keypad has fresh batteries, the transformer is plugged into a working outlet, and the breaker on the gate circuit hasn’t tripped. Those three checks resolve maybe one in five no-response calls, and they cost you nothing.

What you should not attempt is wiring a Ghost Controls receiver or keypad on your own if you are not familiar with low-voltage board connections. The receiver ties into the opener’s control board, and wiring it incorrectly can short the board, which does not damage the receiver. It fries the motor controller. That is the long-term damage we see from DIY access control attempts across Dallas, and the fix is a lot more expensive than the original part would have been. On battery-powered models, you are also handling solar charge lines and a 12V battery pack, and that deserves a trained hand too.

If the system is dead and you have done the three basic checks, call (940) 531-9746. We’ll ask a few questions, tell you what we think is wrong, and get someone out to you. The estimate is free, and the price you get is the price you’ll pay.
