Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

Elite keypad and intercom repair in Dallas typically runs between $210 and $540 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad face, the control board, or the full unit. We stock Elite-compatible keypads, intercom modules, and control boards on our trucks, so most repairs happen same-day. The usual way Dallas homeowners find us: the keypad works at the street but not at the house, the intercom crackles when a visitor calls, or the gate simply stops responding to any code entry.

If you’ve got an Elite system and a keypad or intercom that’s gone dark, flaky, or half-functional, this page lays out what’s actually wrong, what it costs, and whether it’s worth your Saturday. Lonnie Burke, owner of Carver Gate Repair Dallas, has spent nearly two decades diagnosing these exact failures across west Dallas, including a run of older Elite keypads along the Kessler Park corridor that fail in a very specific way. More on that below.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite keypads and intercoms are built into a few distinct model lines, and the replacement path depends on which one you have. The most common we see in Dallas are the Elite MMX keypad series, the Elite Proximity readers, and the Elite telephone-entry intercom units wired into swing or slide gates. If your keypad is a standalone pedestal or a flush-mount plate with a metal face and raised rubber buttons, it’s likely an MMX variant. If it has a small screen and a call button for visitor-to-house communication, that’s an Elite telephone-entry intercom.

The compatibility gotcha with Elite is this: older MMX keypads from the mid-2000s use a different wiring harness than the current production units. If a homeowner blindly orders a new keypad online, it arrives with a connector that doesn’t match their existing wire run. We carry adapter harnesses on the truck for exactly this reason, and we verify the wire count and connector type before quoting. The aftermarket decision for Elite is straightforward: OEM Elite keypads cost more but match the original faceplate and mounting holes exactly. Quality aftermarket equivalents from brands like DoorKing or Linear often fit the same cutout and run $40 to $80 less, but we’ll tell you if the color or key feel differs. For intercom boards with a failed relay, we generally recommend OEM Elite parts because the relay timing and call-button logic are tuned to Elite’s specifics.

Carver Gate Repair Dallas is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Elite or its parent company. We stock both OEM Elite parts and quality aftermarket equivalents, and we’ll quote both options when they exist.

Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. This usually points to a failed relay on the keypad’s output board, not the gate motor. The keypad still beeps and logs the entry, but the signal that tells the operator to open never fires.
  • Some buttons work, others don’t. Over time, the carbon contact pads under the elastomeric key face wear through. Buttons 1, 3, and 7 get hit most often on Dallas gates, so those fail first. A new keypad face fixed it for under $200 on most residential Elite units.
  • Intercom audio is loud but garbled, or one-way only. This is a failing audio transformer or a corroded terminal block. North Texas heat accelerates corrosion on external intercom boards, especially when the enclosure seal has dried out.
  • Keypad lights up but shows no digits, or displays gibberish. That’s the control board losing its programming memory. It happens after lightning strikes near a property, or simply after 8 to 12 years of power cycling in Texas temperature swings.
  • The gate opens on its own shortly after a visitor call. A stuck relay on the intercom board is sending a continuous open command. It’s not a ghost. If we touch the relay and it drops out, the board needs replacement, not a reprogram.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Elite keypad and intercom repair actually costs in Dallas, broken out. These are installed ranges from jobs we’ve completed in the last year. Your exact price depends on the model, the age of the wiring, and whether we’re swapping the full unit or just the failing board or key face.

  • Keypad face or button membrane replacement: $120 to $190 parts and labor. No wiring change needed.
  • Keypad control board replacement: $180 to $290 parts and labor, including reprogramming all entry codes.
  • Full Elite keypad unit replacement: $260 to $420, includes new mounting hardware and wire termination.
  • Intercom board replacement (telephone-entry units): $260 to $540, depending on whether it’s a single-relay or multi-relay board and whether the visitor-call handset needs to be re-paired.

Every quote includes the part, the labor, and the wiring verification. We write the price down before work starts. It doesn’t change at the door. The repair itself is covered by our written guarantee for a full year. If the keypad or intercom fails again inside that year, the second visit is free. No charge, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

Elite keypads and intercoms run on low-voltage DC, generally 12 or 24 volts. That’s not a shock hazard, but it is a diagnostic hazard. The failure isn’t always the part you can see. A keypad that won’t respond can be a bad keypad, a broken wire 30 feet away, a loop detector that’s stuck, or an operator board that stopped listening. If you swap the keypad yourself and it still doesn’t work, you’ve spent $150 and learned nothing. That’s the expensive kind of frustration.

What’s safe to check: clean the key face with a dry cloth, confirm the circuit breaker for the gate is on, and look for visible wire cuts near the pedestal. What’s not worth guessing at: anything involving the control board, the relay outputs, or the intercom’s audio wiring. Those take a meter and a known wiring diagram. Lonnie’s rule applies here: if we can’t tell you what’s wrong before we touch it, we haven’t looked closely enough. Call (940) 531-9746 and we’ll diagnose it over the phone when possible, or schedule a visit with a written quote.
